La Frontera announces first retail commitments

by Christopher Martin, Leader Staff

The first anchor tenants for Round Rock's 328-acre master planned retail and business community, La Frontera, have been announced. The first retailers to sign on include home construction and hardware store Lowe's, wholesaler Sam's, office supply store Office Depot, clothing retailer T.J. Maxx and clothing retailer Old Navy.

Other first-round developments include department store Kohl's, home retailer Bed Bath & Beyond, department store, Marhsall's, pet supply store Petco, home retailer Pier 1, electronics store Circuit City and book retailer Barnes & Noble.

Motorists along IH-35 and F.M. 1325 may already be noticing the mounds of dirt piling up as work begins on the grounds. La Frontera's $7 million road infrastructure began construction earlier this month.

Developers hope to have the first retail shops open by summer 2000. Ultimate build-out for the property is scheduled for 10 years.

Developers are hoping to cash in on the explosive growth in the area – 289,559 people live within 10 miles of La Frontera. Round Rock residents, however, are hoping the planned roads can handle the new traffic.

The properties are being managed and contracted by Developers Diversified Realty of Cleveland, Ohio, and David Berndt Interests of Irving. DDR owns and manages 197 shopping centers across the nation.

DDR vice-president Eric Mallory said the development will create more than 2,200 full and part-time jobs. Developers also estimate more than $2.7 million in local tax revenues annually.
